Arable land is a measure of good agricultural land in a country. It is a great indicator for density of population in an area. One big reason for the high density of population and large number of people in India is that the country has a lot of arable land.

Our Unemployment statistics measure work (kaam) whereas people want jobs (naukri). The percentage of people who have regular wage paying jobs (naukri) in rural India is very low. They are mostly self-employed (including as farmers) or engage in casual labour.

Even in 2020-21, this figure was below 15%.

Police in India is structured along military lines. Constables only get promoted to head constables. This is a serious motivation issue and is one of the reasons why police forces in India are not as good as they could be.

When we hear of water shortages, our minds automatically go to leaking taps, swimming pools and industries. Any significant savings in water use will have to address agricultural water consumption. We can contribute much more to water conservation by changing our personal habits than by consuming less water directly. For example, by consuming less sugar.

Since 1996, at least 75 percent of representatives of each Lok Sabha have been graduates, according to data collated by the PRS Legislative Research. Lazy criticism of politicians brands them as uneducated and this is just not true. There are valid criticisms of parliamentarians but their lack of education is not one of them.

88.6% of childbirths happened in an institution, according to 2019-21 National Family Health Survey, compared to 78.9% in 2015-16. Birth in a relatively hygienic institution significantly reduces infant and maternal mortality. This is a good outcome in itself, and also leads to future decrease in population growth rate.
